This chapter is a comparative study of the two sorts of virtue epistemology now widely recognized. It defends the following four claims: First, from its inception, virtue reliabilism has always included a responsibilist component within its focus. Second, responsibilists have advocated a distinctive conception of responsibilist, character-based intellectual virtue, but it is partial and insufficient. Third, and ironically, we should recognize a sort of active, volitional intellectual virtue that is a special case of reliable-competence intellectual virtue. Fourth and finally, we can best understand the responsibilist, character-based intellectual virtues (highlighted by responsibilists) as auxiliary to reliable-competence intellectual virtues.

Keywords:   character, competence, responsibilism, virtue reliabilism
