Introduction: Ways of tackling diversity in Sinitic languages
This chapter provides an overview for the entire volume and its main topic regarding the unpredictably high degree of diversity to be found in the ten main branches of Sinitic languages, contrary to previous quite widely held views on this subject. Observations are next made on the heterogeneous nature of these different branches of Sinitic, the eight Mandarin dialect subgroups being taken as just one example. After a brief discussion and summary of possible models for treating diversity in Sinitic, this chapter gives concise summaries of each of the chapters included in the volume and the approaches used in each.
