Indian Arrival—Encounters Between Indians and Britons, 1870–1915

(p.1) Introduction
Indian Arrivals 1870–1915

Elleke Boehmer

Oxford University Press

The Introduction lays down the core elements of the book’s critical approach and methodology relating to Indians in Britain, its view of empire as ambivalent and contested, and its understanding of imperial encounter, cultural arrival, intercultural contact, and cosmopolitanism. In respect of its literary focus, the Introduction goes on to outline an interest in textuality, or what it terms ‘cross-border poetics’, as manifested in literary as well as some non-literary writing, that is, in how textual forms mould and model intercultural contacts and relationships. Using an illustrative example from the work of Toru Dutt, it takes this writing—its tropes and formal structures—as both reflective and diagnostic of the Indian–British encounter.

Keywords:   cosmopolitanism, cross-border poetics, cultural arrival, imperial encounter, Indians in Britain, intercultural contacts, Toru Dutt
