The Introduction examines the historical background to some key ideas about development, both of countries and individuals. It looks at concepts of developed and developing countries. It considers some definitions of aid, and how different types of aid can support development. It provides the broad framework for more detailed consideration in later chapters of how ideas about aid and development have been shaped by their political and economic context, and how that context continues to shift.
