Chapter 2 deals with the advent of controversy after the submission of the Remonstrance in 1610. It discusses different positions on the theology of predestination, as well as the civil magistrate’s ius circa sacra, in the works of Grotius, Uytenbogaert, and Trigland, and charts the dynamic of religious controversy. It shows how, by their appeal to the notion of doctrinal consensus, the Remonstrants and the supporters of the States’ toleration policy made themselves particularly liable to being co-opted by those on the very fringes of, or even outside, the Dutch Reformed Church. As a result, the very notion of consensus became increasingly polarized, as the plea for tolerance, concord, and moderation became embedded in an anti-Calvinist rhetoric of vituperation which, resulted in a veritable boom of satirical and libellous literature.
