This volume focuses on Peter Goldie’s substantial and influential work on the emotions, narrativity, and the philosophy of art. Taken together, the essays collected here explain the significance of Goldie’s views and serve as an introduction to his insightful and beautifully crafted books and articles; but in addition, each essay is a fascinating and original contribution to its literature in its own right. The book is divided into three sections: Narrative Thinking; Emotion, Mind, and Art; and Art, Value, and Ontology. Within these sections, leading authorities in the philosophy of mind, aesthetics and the emotions offer the reader an entry point into many of the most exciting contemporary debates on art, emotion, narrative, and the self. It is a testament to Goldie’s own taste in philosophy that a volume on themes from his work is cutting-edge and au courant, each essay treating his work on its subject with the greatest of respect, whilst avoiding hagiography and being concerned to bear significant philosophical fruit of its own. Topics covered include the role that narrative thinking plays in our lives, our imaginative engagement with fiction, the emotions and their role in the motivation of action, the relationship between artistic activity and human well-being, and the appreciation and ontological status of conceptual artworks. A fine array of authors—including Robert Hopkins, Dominic McIver Lopes, David Papineau, and Marya Schechtman—have profound and interesting things to say on these questions.
