Perceptual Recognition, Emotion, and Value
Perceptual Recognition, Emotion, and Value
This chapter outlines an account of perceptual knowledge, one relying on the connected notions of distinctive looks and recognitional capacities. The chapter goes on to assess the extent to which such an account can be employed in a defence of perceptual accounts of emotion and value recognition. It is argued that considerations ruling out lucky knowledge give us some reason to doubt its prospects in the case of value recognition. Recent empirical work on cultural and contextual influences on emotional expression is also discussed, and it is argued that a perceptual account of value recognition is consistent with current evidence.
