This chapter provides an overview of marketization and privatization. Following a brief introduction, the second section discusses the relationship between marketization and privatization, and the extent to which the benefits of marketization may be secured without privatization. The third section is concerned with the objectives of privatization, and the extent to which the objectives have been realized. The fourth section examines the methods used to achieve privatization. The fifth and final section discusses the extent to which the economic systems emerging in CEE represent a form of capitalism.
