This chapter begins the author’s presentation of a theory of use for proper names, consistent with the central tenets of Millian semantics. After some comments about the role of proper names within a theory of language, it proceeds by discussing certain features of the introduction (the ‘launch’) of proper names within a linguistic community. As a result, it discusses the role of launchers, and it presents the ideas of automatic and smooth launchings. This chapter also pauses on the characteristics of articulations qua ‘launching devices’, thus indirectly approaching the issue of the apparent syntactic complexity of certain name-like expressions. The chapter concludes with a brief discussion of the contrast between ostensive and descriptive launchings.
