Losing Touch

Jonathan Cole

Oxford University Press

This chapter starts with Ian’s life with his second wife Linda as they leave the south of England to move north to the Lake District where they eventually bought an old farmhouse in need of renovation. Ian volunteered to do access audit work, for expenses only, on hotels for an organization specializing in practical information for disabled people and their families. He found he was ideal for this type of work: his need for intellectual immersion in actions we normally do without thought was, here at least, an advantage. He soon became one of the organization’s best workers and was given a huge area to cover, from Birmingham to Scotland. He had found his life’s work. Ian remained fascinated by movement in all its forms, but differently and more deeply and this helped him excel in access audit.
