Herder’s Cultural Theory and Theology

(p.164) 12 ‘Populism, Expressionism, Pluralism’—and God?
Isaiah Berlin and the Enlightenment

The fact that Johann Gottfried Herder has been variously assigned to the Counter-Enlightenment (by Isaiah Berlin), to the mainstream (Robert E. Norton) and to the Radical Enlightenment (Jonathan Israel) suggests both that these categories need revising and that Herder’s place in eighteenth-century thought requires better definition. The chapter begins by rehearsing and amplifying criticisms that were levelled at Berlin’s account of Herder. It then tries to re-centre the discussion by giving closer attention to the theological dimension of Herder’s thought. The change of emphasis promises to give a better account of Herder’s ideas about culture than that offered by Berlin.
