(p.1) Introduction
Einstein and Twentieth-Century Politics

Richard Crockatt

Oxford University Press

This chapter makes the case for a new look at Einstein’s political views on the basis that, despite the vast literature on Einstein, no synoptic study of this subject currently exists. This book places Einstein firmly in the context of international politics in the twentieth century. Rather than looking at Einstein in isolation, I explore his connections with a group of global intellectuals who constituted an informal ‘liberal international’, the members of which were repeatedly called on, or who took it upon themselves, to exert their influence on the great international issues of the day. In exploring Einstein we are also exploring key ideas—above all liberal internationalism—and political events of the twentieth century as well as the role of intellectuals in politics.

Keywords:   global intellectuals, liberal internationalism, international politics, twentieth century, liberal international
