In this chapter, the almost forgotten Bolzanian theory of signs is illustrated that, in the case of linguistic signs, for the first time in the modern age presents again the old Stoic distinction between meaning in the strict sense and meaning in the broad sense, a distinction that is today usually formulated in terms of sense and reference, and is attributed to Frege.
