Heat flow and thermal relaxation

(p.136) 10 Heat flow and thermal relaxation

Andrew M. Steane

Oxford University Press

The solution of heat flow problems involving the thermal diffusion equation is explained. Conduction through a flat wall and into a sphere is described. A worked example using Fourier analysis is presented. The estimation of thermal relaxation times is discussed, and the speed of sound in a gas explained. Convection (Newton’s law of cooling) is briefly presented in the exercises.

Keywords:   Diffusion equation, conduction, Fourier analysis, relaxation time, speed of sound
