Modelling real gases

Modelling real gases

(p.216) 15 Modelling real gases

Andrew M. Steane

Oxford University Press

The behaviour of real (as opposed to ideal) gases is described and modelled. The van der Waals, Redlich–Kwong, Dieterici, and Peng–Robinson equations are all described, and the virial expansion is introduced. The compression factor and Boyle temperature are defined, and the concept of critical parameters is explained. The liquid–vapour phase change is discussed, with detailed application of the van der Waals equation and the Maxwell construction. The law of corresponding states is discussed.

Keywords:   van der Waals, Redlich–Kwong, Dieterici, Peng–Robinson, virial, compression factor, Boyle temperature, critical parameters, Maxwell construction, corresponding states
