We discuss processes involving an expanding fluid, and applications to cooling and turbines. The Joule expansion, adiabatic expansion, and Joule–Kelvin expansion (throttling process) are all treated, the latter at length. The Bernoulli equation is derived. Cooling and liquification of gases by the Linde method is described in full. General flow processes are introduced, and an elementary treatment of the gas turbine is given. The exercises treat these and further applications, such as the Rankine cycle and Brayton cycle.
