A variety of effects related to first-order phase transitions are discussed. The treatment of surface effects, metastability, and nucleation are explained. The behaviour of the Gibbs function is explored. The vapour pressure outside a droplet is discussed and Kelvin’s formula obtained. Colligative properties are introduced. Osmosis is defined and a simple formula for osmotic pressure is obtained. The changes in melting and boiling points of a solvent in the presence of a solute are obtained.
