A survey of thermodynamic ideas

(p.7) 3 A survey of thermodynamic ideas

Andrew M. Steane

Oxford University Press

First the concepts of energy and entropy are introduced in general terms, by discussing energy conservation and the fact that not all energy transformations are possible. Then we introduce the basic terminology and concepts of thermodynamics: system, control surface, state, extensive, intensive, equilibrium, temperature, quasistatic, reversible, irreversible, adiathermal, isentropic, adiabatic, expansion coefficients, heat capacities, thermal reservoir, and the zeroth, first, second, and third laws of thermodynamics. The van der Waals and ideal gas equations of state are mentioned. The chapter prepares the ground for the rest of the book.

Keywords:   extensive, intensive, equilibrium, quasistatic, reversible, irreversible, adiathermal, adiabatic, thermal reservoir, laws of thermodynamics
