Left-of-Centre Parties and Trade Unions in the Twenty-First Century

Party–union relations in France are based on multidirectional, occasional, ad hoc links, although a reformist union bloc with links to the Socialist Party and a radical union bloc with weak links to both Socialist and Communist Parties can be detected. The major change in party–union relations in France is the disintegration of the PCF-CGT dyad since the 1980s. This change, as well as continued ad hoc relations elsewhere, can be explained by cost–benefit analysis and structural considerations linked to union fragmentation. Changes are also, however, the result of historical ideational factors that emphasize trade union independence from political parties.
