The Dark Side of Technology

Peter Townsend

Oxford University Press

Reliance on technology has generated unexpected vulnerability to many natural events that previously would have been unimportant. Two scenarios are given of potential disasters that may ensue from inevitable major solar sunspot emission events. Such coronal ejections have the capability to destroy satellites and/or electrical power grids. The problem is certain to occur in the near future, so the chapter looks at the consequences and the protective measures that are needed to minimize their effects. Satellite loss by fragments from old and failed satellites will increase, and may make such systems obsolete. Satellite failure will have global impact. Power grid destruction is of immediate concern for advanced nations at high latitudes, and it will shift the balance of political power.
