(p.1) 1 Introduction
Qur’an of the Oppressed

Shadaab Rahemtulla

Oxford University Press

This chapter sets the stage for the study, laying out the primary research question and the answer to this question, both of which are outlined in the book abstract. The author’s methodological approach is also unpacked. Comparative textual analysis is the primary method, examining and contrasting the exegetical writings of Esack, Engineer, Wadud and Barlas. Supplementing this textual study, semi-structured interviews were carried out with each intellectual. In addition to providing a rationale as to why these intellectuals were singled out for analysis, unearthing the significance of their works, and explaining the layout and structure of the chapters, the author theorizes a key term invoked by all the intellectuals in question: namely, the Qur’an as being the ‘Word of God’.
