Tensions With The Allies
Tensions With The Allies
This chapter discusses the mental landscape of physicists inside postwar Germany: superficial admiration and opportunistic friendliness among the defeated; covert reserve and distrust concerning denazification in the four zones, denunciations, and official questionnaires; and stubborn resistance to Allied Control through exonerating certificates issued in professional solidarity. Resentment was fueled by the low conviction rates of the tribunals, unequal justice in the four zones, and debilitating research restrictions.
