Republic of the Congo (population 2.99 million people) is a country in Western Africa, bordering the South Atlantic Ocean that covers an area of 342, 000 km2. There appears to be just one hospice-palliative care organization operating in Congo-Brazzaville: L'Association Congolese Accompagner (ACA). It was founded in 1996 by Soeur Eliane Julienne Boukaka, of the Congregation Occiliatrise. It also cares for incurably ill persons, particularly those with AIDS and cancer, and offers support in the hospital and in the home. About fifty persons are in the care of ACA on a given day. ACA has a compliment of about ten doctors and nurses and is supported by 100 volunteers. The chapter then offers the history and development of hospice-palliative care in Congo-Brazzaville. It specifically addresses the political economy of this country.
