Algeria (population 32.13 million people) is a country in Northern Africa, bordering the Mediterranean Sea that covers an area of 2, 381, 740 km2. Palliative care services have not been identified in Algeria, but there is evidence of growing interest. For the years 2000–2002, the average defined daily dose consumption of morphine for statistical purposes (S-DDD) in Algeria was 0. A report by nurse educator Françoise Porchet and her colleagues on the training they gave in the Maghreb is given. The public health context is addressed, including Algeria's population and epidemiology. The chapter also considers the health care system. The WHO overall health system performance score places Algeria 81st out of 191 countries. Finally, Algeria's political economy is investigated.
