Mozambique (population 18.54 million) is a country in south eastern Africa that covers an area of 801, 590 km2. The health repercussions of the AIDS epidemic have been the impetus for introducing care to the chronically ill in Mozambique. In a five-year programme supported by the Global Fund from 2004, HIV/AIDS-related programmes are to be scaled up. Palliative care is not mentioned in the agreement although the provision of antiretroviral therapy forms part of the continuum of care for people living with HIV/AIDS. The WHO overall health care system performance score places Mozambique 184th out of 191 countries. The political economy of this country is provided.

Keywords:   Mozambique, HIV, AIDS, health care system, political economy, antiretroviral therapy
