Namibia (population 1.95 million) is a country in Southern Africa bordering the South Atlantic Ocean that covers an area of 825, 418 km2. Home-based care provides the only service approximating to palliative care. The impetus for the development of these services has been the AIDS epidemic. Catholic Aids Action (CAA) provides home-based care, HIV prevention education, Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT), support for orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs), and community mobilization. In order for palliative care to develop and be effectively coordinated in Namibia, it will be necessary to create a national palliative care association. It is anticipated this may happen in August 2005, with CAA taking a leading role in its development. There is no formal training in palliative care in Namibia. The WHO overall health care system performance score places Namibia 168th out of 191 countries.
