The Wreck of Catalonia

This chapter details Enrique's acceptance of the Catalans as his subjects. He received their oath of fealty through his representatives on November 13, 1462 in the cathedral of Barcelona. Juan attempted to thwart the Catalans' approaches by approaching Enrique with offers of negotiation and offering his illegitimate daughter Juana as a hostage in a pledge of good faith; a move that failed. French sovereign, Louis XI was also surprised by Enrique's behaviour. The prize he counted upon plucking from the Catalan embroilment, Cerdagne and Roussillon, would be put at risk should Catalonia become subject to Castile.
