This chapter discusses the factors that eventually led to the civil war which altered Catalonia's history. These include the traumas of the pulmonary plague (the Black Death) and bubonic plague, economic recession, currency instability, and conflicts involving succession to the throne following the extinction of the Catalan dynasty which had ruled since the county of Barcelona was united with the kingdom of Aragon in 1137.
