This chapter explains the frequencies and spatial distributions of resonant electromagnetic fields in optical cavities formed by highly reflecting plane or concave mirrors. Stable and unstable cavity arrangements are discussed. The total losses of the cavity, its Q-value, and the spectral purity of the laser output are explained.

Keywords:   resonant modes, optical cavities, resonant electromagnetic field distributions, stable cavities, unstable cavities, cavity losses, Q-value, intrinsic laser linewidth
