Atomic and Laser Spectroscopy

This chapter derives the transition probabilities for magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole radiation, which are important for understanding gaseous nebulae, the earth's aurora and emission from the solar corona. Two-photon radiative decay of hydrogenic systems and forbidden transitions in helium-like systems are also discussed. Comparisons between theory and experiment are described, including collision processes involving metastable atoms.

Keywords:   magnetic dipole radiation, electric quadrupole radiation, two-photon decay, forbidden transitions, helium-like systems, metastable atoms
