The Problem of Referents: Interpretation with Reference to What?
This chapter looks at the question of referents: to what does Mithraic iconography allude? Is it to Persian myths and beliefs about Mithra? Or are the referents, especially in the tauroctony, the image of the bull-killing Mithras, to the heavens as culturally constructed? Are they primarily astronomical and/or astrological?
Keywords: referents, iconography, Persian religion, Iranian Mithra, tauroctony, astronomy, astrology
