‘The Employee’ and ‘the Worker’: The Fragmented Expansion of UK Labour Law
The chapter is centred on categories of workers that are not captured by the dominant legal conceptualization of the employment relationship. It traces the embodiment of this model in statutory protections enacted in UK labour law since the 1960s, outlining the ways in which it has limited labour law's protection by excluding many economically dependent workers, including semi-dependent workers, casual workers, and workers in multilateral relationships. The chapter then examines the reforms introduced by the New Labour government with the objective of extending the scope of labour law, which ground certain statutory measures in the model of ‘the worker’.
