War to the death in Monaghan

War to the death in Monaghan

(p.47) 3 War to the death in Monaghan
Eoin O’Duffy

Oxford University Press

This chapter examines Eoin O'Duffy's leadership in the Irish War of Independence and the war to the death in Monaghan County. It discusses his successful destruction of the Ballytrain barracks in February 1920, his arrest and participation in the hunger strike of the prisoners' military council, and his reorganization of the Irish Volunteers. The final six months of the conflict were the most ruthless, and this can be attributed to the actions of O'Duffy and of the Irish Republican Army (IRA).
