The Introduction explains the general approach to the history of philosophy practised by the contributors to this book. Each chapter is briefly introduced, and where relevant, the light it throws on the role of religious orthodoxy or dissent in the intellectual history of the period is identified. Links between the contributions are noted where appropriate. A brief tribute to M. A. Stewart, to whom the collection is dedicated, is included.
