This chapter draws on an unorthodox and interdisciplinary range of sources, both scholarly and popular, to investigate the politics of music and emotion as they are affected by mediation, social context, and public use. The purpose is to broaden the scope of research that may be too narrowly focused, and suggest some avenues for further study. To this end, it examines the use of music in public contexts that seem particularly relevant to the current period: the construction of national identity, resistance to state power, political causes that espouse impulses as disparate as charity and hate, and various instances of social manipulation and control. The examples in the chapter, which take the reader from the early 20th century to the current period, have been chosen, not as an exhaustive list of possibilities, but rather as an instructive sample of intense emotional engagement with mass-mediated musics and/or large-scale social uses. To provide historical background, it begins by analysing some of the assumptions, definitions, and theories that have shaped our beliefs and practices regarding the affective power of music through the ages.
