Handbook of Music and Emotion: Theory, Research, Applications

This chapter discusses a selection of musicological or music-theoretical approaches to emotion in Western ‘art’ and popular music, most of them written since 1950, emphasizing in particular those that set out general frameworks within which to understand how specific pieces of music embody, arouse, signify, or otherwise express emotional states. Bearing in mind the likelihood that many readers will be unfamiliar with the discipline, however, it begins with a whistle-stop tour of thinking about music and emotion since around 1600: this will serve as much to contextualize musicology as to identify issues and points of reference that will be drawn on later in the chapter.
