Stratified and Contextual Theories

Stratified and Contextual Theories

(p.211) 14 Stratified and Contextual Theories
Saving Truth From Paradox

This chapter investigates stratified theories of truth, in both uncontextualized and contextualized variants, both ‘finely stratified’ theories like Tarski's and ‘coarsely stratified’ theories that build upon fixed point constructions. It is argued that the coarsely stratified theories have less advantage over the finely stratified than they initially appear to, and also that the usual kinds of stratified theories (whether contextualized or not) don't in the end have an advantage over unstratified. An alternative kind of stratified theory is then considered, which in a sense ‘reverses’ the Tarski hierarchy. This is shown to yield a better theory, but is best thought of not as involving ‘levels of truth’ but ‘levels of determinateness’.

Keywords:   stratified truth, hierarchy, contextual truth, Burge, Kripke, determinateness
