This chapter proposes a theory to describe the overall architecture of human lateral prefrontal functions based on recent neuroimaging results. It describes an information-theoretic approach to cognitive control that clarifies how cognitive control works as a unitary function though operating through multiple, interacting functional components implemented in distinct lateral prefrontal cortex (LPFC) regions. The theory suggests a basic segregation between two embedded prefrontal executive systems involved in the temporal and hierarchical organization of action and thought.
