This introductory chapter begins with a description of the book, which is the third of three volumes on the religious experience as mediated through culture and the arts. It then lays out the theoretical foundations for the succeeding chapters. It argues that although Christianity cannot help but be influenced by its wider cultural setting, it is quite wrong to suppose that this must always be to Christianity's disadvantage.
