Hymns and Psalms
Hymns and Psalms
This chapter explores how the music of worship recalls, renews, or initiates experience and it looks at the contribution that metaphor and symbol make. It begins by offering some reflections on the historical background to our present situation. It then focuses on the issues raised by imagery that goes beyond explicit biblical precedent (including what criteria might be applied in our own day), the question of match between music and words, and, finally, the range of experience to which such writing might appeal.
