The HIV Pandemic

This chapter reviews Jamaica's response to its HIV epidemic. The experience of HIV control in Jamaica shows that a comprehensive programme that includes targeted interventions may begin to slow down the epidemic. The emphasis on sexually transmitted disease control has resulted in a significant decline in syphilis, congenital syphilis, gonorrhoea, and ophthalmia neonatorum. The numerous and varied education, intervention, and outreach programmes, including mass media, person-to-person interaction and cultural approaches, have resulted in a significant increase in condom use, a small decline in the proportion of men with multiple sex partners, and a small increase in the proportion of women abstaining from sex.
