This chapter examines the patterns of cooperative activity involving alliances or partnership between two firms involving a multiplicity of cooperative agreements, and the possibility of networks characterized by a club-like behaviour and comprising a number of cooperating firms. First, it explores how alliances and networks might evolve in practice. The chapter then examines how the patterns predicted compare with the actual development of alliances and networks in practice.
