This chapter draws upon the framework that has been developed to set out fundamental issues which a theory of the firm should be able to deal with. It focuses on the spoke theories, arguing that these should be able to give a better account of the nature and boundaries of the firm. The chapter begins with the resource-based approach and then goes on to discuss the relevance of hierarchy, decision, and technological change. The system and pattern in the formulation of corporate strategies are also examined. Finally, the chapter discusses the notion of path dependency, in which opportunities for future change are constrained by the particular development path the system has taken in the past.
