Pattern in Corporate Evolution

Oxford University Press

This chapter examines the behaviour of the multinational enterprise (MNE). It considers the alternative perspectives to the question of why the MNE might evolve in the first place. The chapter then analyses the MNE and its alternatives, namely, specialization, diversification, and exporting, in terms of resource linkages. The characteristics that would tend to be associated with the MNE in a resource-based approach are also identified. Finally, the chapter examines the extent to which these characteristics appear consistent with the empirical evidence.

Keywords:   multinational enterprise, MNE, specialization, diversification, exporting, resource linkages, resource-based approach
