The Life of David Hume

Ernest Campbell Mossner

Oxford University Press

In London from September 1737 to February 1739, David Hume was neither alone nor in perfect tranquillity. There were three different worlds in the metropolis that he now had the time and the opportunity to investigate. Despite his concern over making an early contract with a publisher, Hume did learn something of the great world of court, parliament, and high society; of the world of pleasure; and of the world of letters and learning. Although he, at one time or another during his life, was to spend upwards of five years in London, Hume never found it wholly congenial. Perhaps he was alienated by London contempt for provincials and Scotsmen. In such an atmosphere, Hume missed the cosmopolitanism of Paris and France, and even of Edinburgh.
