An emblem for the history of romance motifs might be the hypothetical history of the stage bearsuit used in plays from the lost Valentine and Orson to The Winter’s Tale: once it was in the property cupboard, it invited more reworkings of traditional motifs to fill it, to give it continuing life on stage. Romances start out as stories that give resonance and meaning to their conventions; over time, their conventions and resonances seek stories and meanings to fill them. The chapter also includes a working definition of romance, and brief histories of the genre in England (across all its languages, and in relation to continental European romance) and of the knight.
