Herodotus and his World

Angelos P. Matthaiou

Oxford University Press

This chapter re-examines the location of the Herakleion of Marathon on the basis of the find spot of two inscriptions related to the sanctuary, i.e., the regulations for the administration of the Herakleia contests (IG I3 3) and a dedication to Herakles (IG I3 1015bis). The nature of the monument bearing the epigrams of the Persian Wars (IG I3 503/4) and the original location of its erection are also discussed. The topography of the battle of Marathon is examined on the basis of the above mentioned epigraphical evidence.

Keywords:   Marathon, sanctuary, Persian Wars, topography, epigraphical evidence
