This introductory chapter explains the coverage of this book, which is about financial crises and ways to prevent them. It discusses the strategies launched to reform and strengthen the international financial system following the outbreak of the Asian crisis in 1997–1998, which spread to Latin America, Russia and New York. It evaluates the accomplishments of these initiatives and the other schemes launched by international financial agencies, and proposes ways for dealing with and preventing global financial crises.
