Two groups of evidence survive concerning federalism in west Crete: first, a number of references to the ‘Polichnitai’; second is evidence concerning a League of the Oreioi, the inhabitants of the White Mountains in south-west Crete. This chapter attempts to identify the centripetal and centrifugal forces leading to the establishment and collapse of these alliance systems.
