As ‘prologue’ chapter of the text and this study, the geographies, hagiographies, and semiologies at work in the opening tableau of the Tentation are elucidated in this order, and for the first time in this way. The analogous ancient, 4gh‐ and 19th‐century descriptions of Egypt are underscored alongside the coherence of the Vita Antonii and Flaubert's story of Antoine, with its imaginary figures, Ammonaria and Didymus. Antoine's interpretations of scripture concluding the chapter are read as models the study takes up ‘literally’, to read the Tentation as a set of carefully mapped analogies and comparisons.
